Hi, I heard about this contest on TinyCartridge.com, quickly checked out the rules here and began work on a Meteor Night game without realising there were already two under way.
(I’ve just noticed I introduced a big bug to Version 2 & 3 so please use version 1)
I have only made one game before using Flixel, so I don’t have much experience. Because of this my game idea is pretty simple and quite different from the others: You and your loved one sit watching the stars on a hill somewhere. Your loved one is getting pretty sleepy in the warm summer air, so when a shooting star darts across the sky you must wake your loved one so that they might catch a glimpse of it. Doing so gains you a heart, gain enough hearts and you win both their affection and The Game!!
I will also include an ‘attract mode’ where no interaction is required and the game idly plays itself.
For the title screen I am using the art from the original design:
Here’s a screen shot of the game using the original art as a place-holder: (The stars scroll gently across the sky)
With one day left I’m going to try and hack some frames of animation from the original artwork …
Gameplay logic is pretty much all in place bar a few things that require fine tuning. Although I might have to leave out ‘attract mode’ if I run out of time.
I ran out of time for a lot of features. There’s no sound (although I was planning on adding only music, not sound effects). As I can’t draw and failed to trick an artist into drawing for me, I edited the graphics from the original cart to add the limited animation I needed. Also Attract Mode is not present, so instead the game goes into a kind of ‘attract mode’ if you win, so you can sit there and watch the stars as long as you like. I recommend turning out the lights, projecting this at the wall, putting on some slow jazz and … I’ll leave the rest to you ; )
Are you going to finish the part where they make sweet meteor night love? lol
Its short but sweet, please please add some nice sounds and some space background noise or music and you got yourself the perfect game screensaver for any computer!
Sadly I don’t have the art-skills to include a steamy love-making scene. And I also liked that the characters as Ashley Davis designed them are pretty androgynous so it works for anyone.
I will add some music, attract mode and more frames to the animation on Monday, but I’ll leave this version up for judging in the contest.
Very simple game. If you want to know my opinion, I think you started with a good idea, but mixed it with too many “game-y” elements. What I mean is that you aim to create a super soft experience, almost romantic, so why putting the number of stars to spot? Why putting hud? Why even putting a winning condition? :)
Well ‘attract mode’, when I code it, will be pretty much like what you were expecting. I just figured to be a ‘game’ it’s got to have some interactive element and win conditions etc. I also planned to have the meteors go faster the more hearts you get, increasing the difficulty, so that you can be like “hey babe, I beat this game for you, now let’s make out” but if you just wanna get straight to the making out you could turn out the lights, project this onto a wall and leave it running in ‘attract mode’. Well that was the idea anyway, I ran out of time in the end (finished at 23:58)
I’ve implemented Attract Mode and made a few changes here and there, time permitting, I’ll have the difficulty increase implemented and maybe, just maybe, I’ll get a song finished in time for the release. I just started using Famitracker last night. It’s been a bit of a learning curve, but I’ve got the basic frame of the song down, just needs a few extra instruments and a bit of lovin’.
Latest version, hopefully will get the song included in the next few hours. Working out those flute solos on my guitar and then programming it into Famitracker … takes it’s time!
Version 2 fixes a few small bugs and adds in ‘Attract Mode’ which is like the main game except it requires no user interaction. Version 3, if I get it done in time, will include the chip tune cover I’m working on. However progress is super slow since I’ve never done this before so this might not happen tonight.
I’ll leave links for all versions up and I’ll let you decide which one to include in the distribution for download. I would like to add that my laptop charger blew up the day after the official deadline so I’ve been without a PC for a little while (not that I’m trying to influence your decision or anything, hehe).
