Meteor Night
I was browsing all the famicase entries of the last years, searching for some ideas after scrapping other ideas that I just didn’t know how to implement correctly in a game and suddenly… I saw this cartridge and thought: “Hey, this looks familiar!” Turns out it’s made by Ashley Davis in collaboration with Tiny Cartridge, an artist and a blog respectively that I follow and really like! After reading their the game description I just couldn’t resist, now I have to make this game!
Their idea is “Designed to be played with friends or a date, Meteor Night shows a peaceful sky full of 8-bit stars. Sometimes a meteor will fly across the sky. Turn down the lights, bring a blanket and snacks, and enjoy Meteor Night together.” That’s totally awesome and I want to do just that!
But that would be a bit too easy for this competition so I want to add a more game-y part. My gameplay idea is that the sky is unfortunately completely starless, so the player has to collect all the stars, meteors and all that (sounds a bit like Mario…nah!) to recreate the sky! So there are two modes, one where you have to collect stars and the other where you can watch the sky like the original idea. Everytime you collect a star it will be added in the sky and you can show it to your friends and/or a date! Imagine, you complete the sky, watch it with your girlfriend/date/whatever and then you can say “Look, I made this sky, just for you!” I know, sounds a bit stupid but whatever :P
And I though “Maybe the players can customize the sky however they want…?” Dunno if I’ll do that and I have yet to think HOW the player will collect stars so that’s for the future :D
Thanks guys! Finally started development two days ago :)
Decided to make a topdown (Zelda-like) exploration game! The world is divided in five areas with a hub in the center and each area is going to have a particular theme and gameplay. The objective is to make every area unique enough filled with surprises so that the player will have fun collecting stars and discovering new stuff and places! Usually I don’t really like running around and exploring in games too much and that’s why I decided this game, to see if I can find a way to make it fun for me and other players too :D (big thanks to Shalmezad, had a fantastic talk with him on irc yesterday!)
Development wise, I’m going to use Flixel since I am comfortable enough with it! Already made some basic engine stuff, mainly movement and jumping (Mario & Luigi SS style!) for the character!
And I’ll be doing all the pixel art for the game, in fact it’s going to be a huge task to make five different areas but I think I can make it in two months! :)
Just a little screen! IT’S ALL PLACEHOLDER, the tileset is old stuff I made years ago and the character is still work in progress :) The black box should be a NPC and the white box is used for interacting with objects, just trying some stuff and learning new stuff about Flixel :D
Thanks guys :) No work done in the last week because I had to take some exams! At last I decided to drop Flixel and go back to Game Maker Studio (Windows & Mac) since I can use it much better and I would never finish the game in time with Flixel…
I had lots of headaches with flixel, you have to work around it a lot to make a topdown game. It’s surely possible but I don’t know the engine enough to make such a complex game in less than two months :|
Now that I’m back with Game Maker I feel much more confident :D Hope I’ll be able to post some actual concept art and screenshot in a week!
Quick drawing I did a couple hours ago… wanted to try a few colors, but meh, the characters and the background are way too different… I’m not very good at this anyway :P I should focus on coding!
Man, almost two weeks since last update! So…everything is going smoothly and a lot changed! The game is not topdown anymore and is now sidescrolling! What I had in mind for the game and the top down perspective just didn’t work together in my mind so…platform it is!
This is a screen from the start zone (the HUD is all placeholder!) The yellow rope (it’s actually made of stars!) is gonna be the main tool and the player will be able to change its shape depending on the situation. For example, you can see the main guy using it as a lasso in the screenshot! There won’t be more than 2 or 3 shapes though!
The world is just like before, a field map and five different areas, explorable in any order the player wants!
Wops time’s running out, I’m gonna write something more detailed later! For now check out this SWEET pony!
Awesome, I use stars in my game too (but just for points though). The Rope concept is very cool! Graphics look great, I’m glad your doing pixel art! Keep up the great work! Would love to see a video soon!
Actually no, but I managed to make up something for the deadline! I couldn’t do even half of the things I wanted to do, that’s what happens when you exaggerate and change the design too much :/
Tthe game is very short but I’m pretty satisfied with this, even if it is really buggy and bad…it was a funny experience! I still want to fix various stuff after the deadline and maybe make two more levels! :D I’m waaaay too tired now but I’ll write more about the game tomorrow…here’s the link! I’ll upload the Mac versione in the coming days :D Bye, let me know if you find any bugs, thank you very much!:D

Controls: Arrows - Move /// Z - Jump /// X - Interact, throw lasso ///ESC - Pause, return to title screen
1st level music does not loop. When I go to the cave, the player and monster is wiping with the background. I tried the game twice and the same bugs repeated.
So far the graphics are awesome, and the first level music is nice. Keep up the great work!
Thanks :D I fixed some bugs thanks to your help, here’s the new version! METEOR NIGHT v1.1DOWNLOAD
