Rule Clarifications plz

Hey guys just a couple of clarifications on the wording of the rules and I apologise in advance for being the person to pick up on these things lets get them concrete now so when the masses appear this isn’t asked a dozen times and everyone involved in the admin wishes they hadn’t started :(

It happens in every compo and gets rather silly sometimes :(

First One.
Makes it look like we can’t do as we please with something we own thanks to a couple of bits of ambiguity.

Entries should be started and finished within the timeframe of the competition (feel free to put up your game discussions and begin brainstorming earlier, though) and must be made for the competition only.

“must be made for the competition only”? is this a precursor of the following rule

However, the game itself must be made entirely for this competition.

or is in opposite to the spirit of this rule?

Does “must be made for this competition only” mean we can’t do what we like with the games we create including selling them for mega bucks in one form or another during or after the competition?

A few of the ideas I have have potential for earning their keep in some way and one in particular I’d like to use to both raise funds for the feeding my family fund (starving indie) and for a number of charities because the idea is closely related to activities they campaign on.

I have to worry about these things because if I can’t make money out of my games I have to return to JSA/ESA which is endless and painful thanks to my aspergers.

Second One

However, the game itself must be made entirely for this competition.

Should that be “made in it’s entirety during this competition”? removing the ambiguity and adding the bounds?

Third One

You may submit more than one game (up to a maximum of three), but remember it’s about quality not quantity.

I understand the reasons for this and you don’t want to be swamped by entries by chancers looking to win a prize rather than being part of the community and being excellent to each other.

But, and it is a big butt ;), I seriously have ideas for so many of these games that would take a day or two to put together and wanted to do as many as possible of the carts not picked up by other people or which have been started but are going down a completely different path.

I could of course do them and post my works in progress here and then not enter them but what would happen then if somebody else came along and just followed my idea and won a prize for being so innovative and inspirational? ;)

While I understand the rules purpose I can’t help but think it limits creativity and creates an artificial boundary that might be avoided by thinking how the judging works. Perhaps a peer review stage before the judges get handed a million and one different games to judge.

My fourth game might be the one judged the best I have created in some way but unless it gets to be seen how will I know which to submit?

just a clarification.

Obviously selling the game for mega bucks in many ways would be stupid as it would limit the number of eyes that could see it.

I was just thinking about things like iOS and Android ports where it costs the developer something to release the game and it’s nice to at least break even over the year.* :)

*(spoken as somebody who has recently done their year end accounts)

1. means that you can’t enter a previously existing game into the competition. The games are yours and you can sell them.

2. Yes, I’ll clarify when I get time.

3. Submit as many as you want. But given the limited timescale, logic dictates that the more games you do the less time you can spend per game.

I have a question: Does the authors know that their covers are being used for this competition? Or the famicase guys as a whole know about it? I was thinking that it would suck if an author of one of the labels from the archive gets angry because their stuff was used without permission or something like that. Thanks.

@zurashu That’s a good question, I hope these guys are snooping around. I would never believe anybody would be mad at using there cover. Its the whole point of the contest.

@zurashu we have been in touch with Famicase organisers Meteor, so they know that the competition exists and are OK with it. I assume they have told at least some of the individuals artists, as two of them are members of this forum: @donbe and @wiznwar (who is even taking part as a graphics guy on the making of one of his covers)

This isn’t a competition question, but a forum question. I didn’t think it merited a new thread.

So if I get the message “your post has been flagged for moderation” when I try to make a new post, will I get notified if that doesn’t go through? I included some JavaScript bookmarklets to let people mess with the innards of my game, and I think that’s probably the holdup.

Your JavaScript bookmarklets have a “denied:” added to the beginning by the forum software. You should be able to edit the post to mention taking that out to get them to work.
